I start on the factory floor. How production is sequenced, where planning meets a real constraint, and what is sitting between operations tell me more than a software shortlist.
The useful outcome is a planner, a supervisor and an operator looking at the same picture, in time to act. AI can recommend the next move from that picture. Without the picture, the recommendation has nothing solid to stand on.

I have built and run software products, so I look at architecture from the engineering side and from the product side. A choice has to survive real customers, real data and a deployment that cannot be taken down for a clean rewrite.
What I watch for is whether the team can still change the system a few years on. The business rules, and the places they are buried, tell me more than the age of the framework.

Software taught me how to turn that process into a system other people can run. Bevywise was where the two met: machines, production, energy, and the applications around them.
I still work that way. Technology should fit the problem. The problem should not be changed to fit the technology.
