Side Upper in Train.
Railways once introduced a berth by name Side Middle, to accompany 9 more passengers to each compartment. But it soon proved to be a bad model as the side upper went a little higher to make it tough for the passenger to get into to the berth. The side middle was removed then. A couple of days back, I took the Perl City express to come to Sattur from Chennai. I got the side upper berth. But in the compartment, I travelled, they have removed the side middle, but have not lowered the Side Upper to the previous position. It became very tough for me to get into the compartment. I saw a couple of people who are more thn 6 feet struggling hard to get in and get out.
The compartment itself is too old that it had a lot of reinforcements done for the different berths. With the revenue Railways is making and considering the cost paid by the consumer for the travel, Railways can replace such older compartments.

Always the Pearl City coaches r maintained in worst condition. You didn’t mentioned about the wash-basin and toilets, it will be even worse. At the same time Pandian and Nellai will be relatively better.
Do you know one fact, the Southern railways is the best in passenger trains maintenance and service. All the trains in Eastern(even North and West) are not even cleaned/maintained for weeks. You cannot even travel in those train unless you get some AC coaches.
Railways will get lesser income by operating Passenger trains rather than Goods train. Hence they wont invest in dual-lane or increasing the freq of trains. If அழகரி wd hv gt d *Railway Minister* post, situation in TN cd hv bn changed
PS: Meanwhile, Mantha submitted a white papers regarding the Railways income, mentioned RW dont have surplus money and not making great profit as quoted by great Lallu.
