Brihadeeswarar temple - Thanjavur
Last week we were @ Tanjore for attending a marriage. Thanjavur is one of the fertile belts of Tamil Nadu. Tanjore is present in the Cauvery belt. Another speciality about this region is the temples build by Cholas and Pandyas. Brahadeeswarar Temple [a.k.a Peruvudaiyar Temple a.k.a Thanjai Periya Koil] is one of the great temples built during the 10th century. The temple was built by Raja Raja Cholan? I. Like most temples, this too have walls like the palace to hide and fight against the rivals. The walls seems to be built later duing the 16th century during the Pandiya era.
Some uniqueness about this Temple:
- The Temple Tower was biggest of this kind.
- The Gopuram [Temple Tower]? was built in a single rock.
- There are scripts that says that the single rock has been transported from a 6 KM using some special transport facilities.
- The vimana never cast its shadow on the ground @ noon during any time of the year. This is one of the greatest design that takes the suns movement from Tropic of Cancer to the Capricon.
- Nandhi of the Periya avudaiyar is a big one.
The lord Shiva [My Favourite God] is the Periya Aavudayar present in the temple. The Lingam is tall and measures 13 feet in height. Do visit this temple if you happen to be there at Tanjore.
Another interesting place around Thanjavur is the GangaiKondaCholapuram. Hope to visit this place when I am out around this place next time. If anyone have any interesting thing about this place do write.
